Jason Giambi's 2008 salary: $23.4M
AP Photo/Jeff Chiu"After seven innings against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, Jason Giambi had to tell A's manager Bob Geren his tank was running on empty.
Giambi, 38, already had legged out an infield single and sprinted after a foul ball that landed just out of his sliding reach.
"I told Bobby, '(The legs) are dead'," Giambi said."
$23.4M!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You get paid $23.4M and you can't even get in good enough shape to leg out an infield single and catch a foul ball?????????????????????????????????????

Run away! Run away!
Let's see...We're still fighting in Iraq and we're going to expand the war in Afghanistan...
The government printed $750 billion to bail out the banks and just printed another $1 trillion to bail out everyone else...
Unemployment is 10% in California and 22% in Detroit...
The stock market was down 34% in 2008 and down another 15% so far this year...
So, what do we have to look forward to?
Ummm...
World War III...
Runaway inflation...
Riots in the slums...
Aaaaand, no money for the future...
Time to buy some guns, boxes of ammo, a few cases of booze and wait for the apocalypse...

Kirsty MacColl...need I say more?
I was at my neighborhood grocery store the other night doing my weekly shopping and I noticed that they actually play background music in the store. I've been going to this store for a few years and this was the first time I noticed it.So, I took a few minutes to listen to what they were playing.
It was a mix that was heavy on the 80's Top-40. I heard some Cars, a little Bryan Adams (well into his wimp phase), and a smattering of Human League. It was all very nice sounding and great to my ears because I grew up with these songs, but it was amazing how easily I could tune it all out.
I started to think about it and I could only recall two times in my life when I heard music in a store where I simply *had* to find out the name of the band playing the song.
One time, it was The Blasters.
The other time, it was Kirsty MacColl.
There was something about Kirsty's voice that was so beautiful to me. There was a preciseness to her singing that still amazes me. She seemed to be able to hit every single note with perfect pitch.
She had a big, powerful voice that fit in across all genres. She sang country, punk, Irish laments, and torch songs. Yet, they all had that essential Kirsty-ness to them. To my ear, there's a little tinge of sadness to her voice. A longing or regret for something. But at the same time, there was a sparkly tone that was captivating.
I don't think I can explain it better than that.
It's much better to listen and hear her for yourself.
The concert below is the only live recording of her that I have ever seen. It was a very special treat for me to get this, and, being a generous person, I am passing on this gift to you.
I totally love the second half of the show, from "They Don't Know" on. I think I could have those four tracks on a permanent loop and be happy.
Absolutely download and enjoy. It doesn't get much better than this.
(Short week for me this week as I'm going to be taking a trip to my absolute favorite city in the United States, San Francisco. Oh, how I wish I had a few million dollars so I could buy a home there to live...)

Those crazy Midwesterners...
This morning, I was enjoying a quiet breakfast of Kellogg's Corn Flakes when I happened to glance at the side of the box.In big bold lettering, I saw the following warning:
"Corn used in this product contains traces of soybean"
This chilled me to the bone.
This is worse than the scandal that came up when Snap and Pop fought with Crackle when he wanted to change his name to just "Crack".
Or that time it leaked out what the Keebler elves *really* meant when they said they were "making cookies" in their tree.
What are the nefarious cereal scientists up to in Battle Creek, Michigan?
I couldn't fathom how they managed this unholy union. So, I did what any normal male would do, I
Are they bringing in leather-clad dominas to whip the poor corn stalks until they complied?
Anyhow...in tribute to those S&M craving, inter-species mating, cross-pollination loving maniacs in Michigan, I give you Gordon Gano and the Violent Femmes!
Be sure to crank it up and tip your hat to the Midwest when you get to "Add It Up":
Why can't I get just one screw
Why can't I get just one screw
Believe me I know what to do
But something won't let me make love to you
